RoS - A NEW DATABASE SYSTEM IN THE GLIWICE RADIOCARBON LABORATORY
An article about Radiocarbon Database from the Geochronometria Journal

The history of radiocarbon dating in Poland is over 50 years old. Gliwice Radiocarbon Laboratory started its activity on the turn of 1960's and 70's. Since very beginning the Laboratory has developed co-operation with many natural and archaeological science centres in Poland and abroad. As a result of this co-operation, we performed about 10 thousands of age determinations for purposes of geology, geomorphology, stratigraphy, palaeography, archaeology, etc. Another group constitutes of radiocarbon measurements for geochemical and environmental research.

Initially, dating results were arranged in thematic files imposed by needs of scientific publications, which included also interpretation of the results. The number of data increased with the passing time and ability of computer evidencing. In 80's the first database was created using dBASE software. It was at the same time when the first attempts to statistical analyses of large records of dates appeared. The possibility of wide share of dating results motivated a group of people associated with Gliwice Radiocarbon Laboratory to start a project to design a new database using modern computer technologies. Realisation of this initiative required some financial help, so in 1999 we submitted proposal to the State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN) on project entitled "Radiocarbon Database for Reconstruction of Past Environmental Change" which after positive evaluation allowed to start creating new database, using Borland InterBase 6.0 server and Borland Delphi 5 software. Wiesław Zajadacz and Natalia Piotrowska worked on programming and designing part of the project, scientific part was supervised by Radiocarbon Laboratory team: Joanna D. Michczyńska, Adam Michczyński, Jacek Pawlyta, Anna Pazdur and Natalia Piotrowska. Today we can share more than 1300 dates, published earlier in many scientific journals.

Any comments related to presentation, minuteness of dates information, pages functionality, etc. would be very helpful in process of sharing following files of dates via Internet.

Performance of Radiocarbon Database site and information stored here was founded by KBN in frame of project No 6 P04E 007 017, realised in 1999-2001.

Any comments and questions please address to Natalia Piotrowska or Anna Pazdur.
