POST-MSC COURSE
"METHODS OF ABSOLUTE DATING AND APPLICATIONS"

The GADAM Centre (Gliwice Absolute Dating Methods Centre) at the Silesian University of Technology commences recruitment for the second edition (first edition ended in the summer semester 2005) of the extramural, post-graduate Internet based studies "Methods of absolute dating and applications". The course is organised within the Marie-Curie Transfer of Knowledge project ATIS (Absolute Time scales and Isotope Studies for investigating events in Earth and human history http://atis.polsl.pl/)

The aim of the Post-MSc course "Methods of absolute dating and applications" is the integration of different disciplines at university level and supplementary interdisciplinary education for graduates in natural science, earth science and archaeology. Upon completion of the Course and defending a thesis the student will receive a diploma certifying completion of post-MSc studies.

The teaching is carried out by university lecturers and professors/researchers employed at the GADAM Centre who have first hand experience in disciplines like radiocarbon dating, stable isotope analysis, luminescence dating, lead-210 and caesium dating, high resolution gamma spectroscopy and the interpretation of the obtained data. They also offer many years of teaching experience at academic level.

The objectives of the Post-MSc course "Methods of absolute dating and applications":

  • Encouraging young researchers specialised in archaeology, earth sciences and environmental sciences to apply absolute dating methods to solving problems relevant to their research work
  • Acquainting young researchers with isotope and radiometric methods used in investigations of natural and human transformed environment
  • Dissemination of information about dating methods and isotope methods among natural and earth scientists, and archaeologists Education of students in physical basis of dating methods and isotope methods with respect to palaeoenvironmental aspects of possible applications of these methods
  • Preparing young researchers for work in interdisciplinary research teams

Main characteristics:

  • The language of the studies is English
  • The course is 3 semesters long (18 months)
  • The course will start at the beginning of the first (October) or the second (February) semester of each year
  • Courses will be graded on the basis of written work, which will be submitted by e-mail
  • At the end of the course students will write diploma theses concerning applications of methods of absolute dating
